FLAGSHIP · SAUTNER STUDIO

Krill — a swarm that runs itself.

Krill is Sautner Studio's flagship product: a decentralized, offline-first control system for Raspberry Pi and Linux. Everything is a node — sensors, timers, calculations, logic gates, cameras, webhooks, over 35 types — wired into a live swarm that reacts in real time. No cloud account. No subscriptions. No single point of failure. Servers discover each other on the network and self-assemble into a peer-to-peer mesh you watch in the app as data flows and alerts fire.

35+ node types 5 platforms, one codebase Real-time SSE mesh 100% offline-first

Built from the ground up

Pure Kotlin Multiplatform with a Ktor server backend. Business logic lives once in commonMain and compiles native to Android, iOS, desktop, web and server. No cross-platform shims, no framework lock-in — the whole stack is Kotlin, all the way down.

Automated test & deploy train

Every commit rides a fully automated pipeline: flake-free virtual-time coroutine tests, Roborazzi screenshot regression, then Gradle build, jpackage / AAB / .deb packaging, GPG-signed Maven Central publish, and delivery over GitHub Actions to signed release — hands off from push to production.

LLM-powered testing & analysis

A multi-agent fleet reviews code and hunts bugs on every change — adversarial confirm/refute gates that de-duplicate findings and open PRs before a human ever sees them, plus nightly architectural analysis. No vibe. Pure artisan Kotlin.

Nimbits — IoT for the cloud, before the cloud caught up.

ROLECreator & Lead Cloud Architect

110+citations across technical books, academic papers, and university syllabi worldwide.

Ground-breaking and ahead of its time: an open-source, cloud-to-edge platform for IoT data logging and rule execution, architected on Google App Engine at the absolute dawn of cloud-based machine-to-machine computing. Nimbits paired big-data time-series logging with a real-time trigger engine years before "IoT platform" was a category.

Academic & industry recognition

Springer Nature · 2019

Classified in Semantic Middleware Architectures for IoT as a benchmark open-source PaaS, alongside enterprise frameworks like Apache Lambda and Kaa.

Wiley Online Library · 2018

Evaluated in Software: Practice and Experience for pioneering middleware integrating IoT streams with High-Performance Computing (HPC).

ScienceDirect / Elsevier · 2015

Analyzed in Procedia Computer Science for big-data time-series logging, real-time trigger engines, and stream-processing architecture.

EDUCATIONAL IMPACT

The architecture, API documentation, and implementation guides designed for Nimbits were so foundational to early IoT education that they were compiled and published as the primary instructional text in the 2012 book Building Internet of Things with the Arduino. The platform became an industry benchmark used worldwide to teach students cloud-to-edge sensor logging.
